If Madhya Pradesh is the dilof India then I think Indore might be that spot on it from where the arrow is piercing through. Located amidst a laidback verdant expanse of the Malwa plateau, in the gentle folds of the historical Satpura range, Indore is the commercial capitol of the state. Connected well by air and rail from Mumbai and Delhi its contrasting fast paced life in the heart of the city and a relaxed atmosphere at the outskirts, has appropriately earned it the acronym of a mini Bombay.I too could not refute this revelation for a first impression as I arrived ex Delhi onboard a two and half hour Indian Airlines flight that stopped briefly en-route at Bhopal. Though the airport seemed clean and hospitable, it surely was far too small to contain the ambition of two simultaneous arrivals. I am sure the Hindustan ka dil dekho advertisers in the tourist department that are busy selling this catchy phrase over practically every conceivable form of media that can reach the Indian middle class, must have sounded the authorities to improve facilities at the airport.
The 18th century Indreshwar templegives the town its name. Situated on the banks of the river Sarasvati, a predominant mythological river of significance, the city was planned and built by Rani Ahilyabai Holker. And therefore it was a little surprise for me that the airport too is called Rani Ahalyabai Holkar airport. Indore as a place is naturally endowed with a salubrious climate and a strikingly beautiful landscape and is typically famous for its
whispering cool breeze in the evenings or the Shab-e-malwa, as it was called thus by the erstwhile royalties. If you are a history buff make sure not to miss the Rajwada. Located in the heart of the city this seven-story building is one of the most significant historic monuments. For many years, this place has served as the center for commercial activities in the City. Although the place has faced the brunt of many a natural calamities, including at least one recorded burning incident by fire in the past, the recent restoration work has helped revivify some of the old glory of this place. In addition, there is the Lal Baag palace of the Holkar dynasty that has the reputation of possessing one of the best kept rose gardens in the India.
Since I was here for a refresher course at the famous IIM Indore, I was immediately chauffeured there. IIM Indore boasts of providing one of the most serene and naturally appealing environments to its students. And their ambition is well reflected by the sprawling campus that is spread over 193 acres of land in distant Rau (about 20 km) at a vantage point that beams over a rising sun in the morning over the distant Satpura range and clusters of houses nestled amidst stretches of green fields down below. Inside campus, the buildings appeal to the aesthetic mind and present a unique architectural style with square balustrades type pillars and bold arches in-between that support red Karauli stone clad walls. Bustling beds of flowers and flowering trees around it give a feeling of an environment friendly ambience. I found the professors and the staff wear a cordial, immediate and friendly expression, outside a sharp, experienced and intellectual mind.
Treasure island
though confusing in its appeal for a name, does impress every visitor for what it is famous for the best designed mall of the country. Located on the ubiquitous MG Road it houses around an artistic atrium, an array of famous Indian and global brands. From MacDonalds for the middle class, to Geoffreys Pub and Rubys Tuesday for the ones with the new found status, food and drink aspirations of the visitors are met here like any other metropolis of India. Surprisingly clean environment inside and suave local shoppers presented a hint that has been well prescribed by several others the city has a hunger for more. Just behind the mall is an extremely friendly and secluded hotel called the Sarovar Portico that surprised the seafarer in me by its ongoing sea food festival. Flavor intensive and well presented food made me forget my dietary restrictions and allowed my senses to invitingly binge.
There is another place that I will strongly advise the visitors to include in their travelers wish list. And that is the Rajasthani theme hotel called Nakhrali Dhani. Located about two kilometers from the IIM it is an exciting escape from the hustle and bustle of the town amidst a rural setting. From palmists to puppeteers to folk dancers, entertainers transport you to another level of satiation that challenge your rustic interior, until you also join them and become a part. Food is served in a hall at the end where turban clad friendly waiters pamper you while you sit with your legs folded in front of a one foot high stool. Though the food might not appeal to all palates, the attitude visible in the hospitality, I am certain, will.
